Collaborative Research Centers

Collaborative Research Centres are funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) as scientific research institutions at universities in which researchers collaborate on an interdisciplinary basis and in scientifically excellent research programmes for a period of up to twelve years. Other research collaborations also pursue the goal of establishing equal opportunities in science.

Neurobiology of Motivated Behaviour

While psychological theories of motivation have a century-old tradition, the investigation of brain mechanisms underlying motivation is a relatively recent endeavor. The Collaborative Research Center SFB 779 "Neurobiology of motivated behavior" at the University of Magdeburg investigates the neuronal basis of motivation-dependent and motivation-controlling processes using an interdisciplinary approach that exploits the complementary advantages of animal and human research. Specifically, the SFB aims at bridging traditional research disciplines encompassing the molecular, cellular and system-physiological levels as much as the clinical aspects of motivation control. Within the SFB new experimental paradigms have been developed, facilitating a more fundamental understanding of the elemental processes relevant for control of motivated behavior.

Molecular Organisation of Cellular Communication in the Immune System

Inter- and intracellular communication is necessary for the appropriate function of the immune system. During the defence against pathogens, cells of the innate and adaptive immune system (granulocytes, macrophages, mesangial cells, dendritic cells, T cells, B cells and epithelial cells) communicate with each other to prevent the expansion and spreading of microbes such as bacteria, viruses or fungi. Alterations of cellular communication can also lead to immunological disorders, for example immunodeficiency, autoimmune disease or allergy. Further, alterations of immune function also affect the ability of the immune system to detect and to eliminate malignant transformed cells.

Integrated Chemical Processes in Liquid Multiphase Systems (InPROMPT)

The Transregional Collaborative Research Center is engaged in the development of efficient production processes based on chemical reactions in liquid multiphase systems. For this process development, a bottom-up-approach and a top-down-solution approach are combined and implemented. The bottom-up-approach is based on the reaction and leads to the overall process. The top-down-solution approach derives individual process steps requirements from all possible process variants.
In this network, more than 60 scientists from different universities and institutions such as Technische Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Dortmund, Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, ETH Zürich and Max-Planck-Institut für Dynamik komplexer technischer Systeme are involved.
